In a 19th-century Dutch farmhouse, a whole wall might have been given over to a scene like this one, painted across sixteen tiles set side by side and read like a single picture from across the room. Found in Montpellier, this framed Delft tile mural shows a windmill turning above a canal, a sailing barge moored at the bank, a farmhouse with a small figure in the doorway, and two cows wading in the shallows. The Dutch had been painting Delft tiles since the early 1600s, copying the blue-and-white porcelain coming from China and inventing a style entirely their own; by the 1800s, the tilers had moved from single squares into full landscape murals, the daily life of the Low Countries painted across whole walls of clay. Sylvie hangs it above a long dining table or a low sideboard, the kind of piece that holds a whole wall on its own.
