19th c. Still Life Painting

France, 19th Century

$395

Antique Artwork Signed

Someone sat down in front of a bowl of fruit and a jug of lavender and decided it was worth painting. It is an early-20th-century oil, signed in the lower corner, the name worn to a flourish you can't quite make out. The still life is the oldest way painters paid attention to ordinary things, the fruit on the table and the flowers in the jug made a subject as serious as any portrait, a quiet exercise in light and color that artists have come back to for centuries. Sylvie hangs it small and low where you come across it up close, the kind of picture that rewards a second look.
