In a 20th-century French apothicairerie, a chest like this stood behind the counter holding the herbs, the tinctures, the powders, and the salves - every drawer labelled, every pull worn by the hand that reached for it twenty times a day. Found in Avignon but originally from the Loire valley, this antique French apothecary chest has nine drawers set in three rows of three, each fitted with a cast iron cup pull and framed by fluted pilasters at the sides. Apothecaries were the chemists, the herbalists, and the village doctors all at once before modern pharmacy split them apart, and the chest behind them was the heart of the operation. Sylvie sets it against a long wall as a kitchen sideboard, the drawers used for napkins, candles, and the small things every house has and never knows where to put.
Minor variations from the images may occur unless otherwise noted. All sales are final.
Notes from Sylvie:
Dear collector, as with many antiques, this piece may show signs of its age, including subtle repairs, a bit of movement, cracks, scratches, small holes, and surface variation from years of use. The top of this pice is comprised of three pieces of wood with a slight gap between each. There are rusting nails and staples, scratches, and cracks throughout the pice adding to its character. The finish on this is a combination of paint and stain.
