Antique One-Of-A-Kind Hard To Find

In a 19th-century French monastery, a long bench like this sat against the wall of a refectory or a chapel hallway, where someone could rest a moment between prayers or wait for a meal to be served. Found in Avignon, this 19th-century French monastery bench is built in oak with a long plank seat, a tall solid plank back, and shaped end supports that taper down to the floor like the sides of a small chapel pew. Benches like this were the quiet furniture of religious life, made simple and made to last, the kind of piece you sat on for years without ever really seeing. Sylvie sets it against a hallway wall with a pair of boots underneath and a basket on top.

Dear collector, as with many antiques, this piece may show signs of its age, including subtle repairs, a bit of movement, cracks, scratches, small holes, and surface variation from years of use. This piece has paint marks, scratches, cuts, and variation in varnish. There is a curvature in the backing of this bench and a hole in the side where a natural wood knot would have been.
