Table à Deux Plateaux

Found in Avignon, this 19th-century oak table was built for the busy part of a room, the spot beside a chair where a lamp, a book, and a glass all end up competing for the same surface. It stands on turned baluster legs, a shaped apron, and a second shelf set low between them. The French called it a table à deux plateaux, a table of two surfaces, the lower shelf built to catch whatever the top could not hold. Sylvie sets it beside a chair with flowers on top and a stack of old books on the shelf below, both within easy reach.
