19th c. Nightstand

France, 19th Century

$995

Antique One-Of-A-Kind Rare

Found in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, this 19th-century French nightstand is a table de nuit in the Louis XV taste, all curves where it could have been all corners, the cabriole legs and scalloped apron lifting a small bedside cabinet into something graceful. The Louis XV style came out of the 18th-century French court, when furniture softened into curves and movement, and country cabinetmakers loved it so much they kept building it for a hundred years after. Behind the two doors is a small cupboard for the things you want close but out of sight, the wood top above it ready for a lamp and a glass of water. Sylvie uses it beside a bed with a few books.
