Provençal Rush Chair

Found in Montpellier, this mid-century French chair is a chaise paillée, the rush-seated country chair that has been made in France for centuries. The frame has turned legs and posts with small ball finials, joined by turned stretchers, and both the seat and the back panel are woven by hand from rush. The pairing of a simple wood frame with handwoven rush is reminiscent of Charlotte Perriand, who brought the same honest materials into her mid-century designs for the French Alps. Having the rush woven on both the seat and the back, rather than the seat alone, is the less common and more interesting version of the form. Sylvie places it at a small desk, the chair you sit in to write a letter and end up staying longer than you meant to.
