Rush Bobbin Chair

From Avignon and dating to the 1930s, this bobbin chair follows a long French tradition of turned wood furniture, where each spindle was shaped by hand in rhythmic repetition, more decorative than necessary but impossible to resist. The frame is built from solid wood with fully turned legs, stretchers, and back spindles, all evenly spaced and balanced, while the rush seat is tightly hand-woven in a classic four-corner pattern that would have been standard in provincial homes at the time. The wood has deepened in tone over the years, and the rush shows slight softening where it’s been sat in, exactly as you’d hope. Sylvie loves it pulled up to a writing desk or tucked at the end of a table, right where it gets used.
