19th c. Oak Monastery Chair

France, 19th century

$395

Antique Rare Hard To Find

This one leans a little taller than you expect, which is exactly why it works. Found in Avignon and originally from a monastery near Maussane, this 19th-century chair would have been part of a refectory or study room, where seating was built to be durable, upright, and consistent across a space. Monastic furniture was never about decoration, it was about discipline and daily ritual, which is why you see these strong panel backs and straightforward construction. Sylvie loves it pulled up to a table where people actually sit for a while. Six available, sold individually.
