Antique Cutting Board - III

Found in Béziers, this 19th-century French cutting board has the soft pale patina of wood that was scrubbed clean every day for a hundred years, finished and worn until the grain showed through almost white. The twine is still threaded through the hole in the handle, the way it would have hung on a peg by the kitchen window. The surface is crossed with knife marks in every direction, and there's a single dark stain near the bottom that someone wiped at and could never quite get out. Sylvie hangs it on a hook in a kitchen with a sprig of fresh thyme tied beside it on the same wall.
